iPad App Review

Epic!

Reading, comprehension

Pre-K through 8

This app is an eBook library with more than 15,00 titles and it is free for educators!

Epic is the app to have to support literacy in the classroom. I would have it on my iPad in my library center so students could listen to audio stories. If I taught older kids, I would set up accounts for each child in my class. Individual accounts allow recommendations based on books they like, as well as provide the teacher an opportunity to track their reading progress and share it with parents.

ScratchJr

Grades K-2

Coding

Students program their own interactive stories and games all while learning how to code.

In my Pre-K classroom, I would first have to teach my students how to use this app. Once my students understand how to use it, they will love expressing their creativity by snapping together graphical programming blocks to create their own interactive story. They will practice problem-solving skills, literacy skills, and numeracy skills. This would be an ideal early-finisher activity.

Blackboard Madness: Math

Skill area: Math

Grade level: K-12

Blackboard Madness: Math is a fast-paced math game. Students can practice addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, algebra, and comparison (greater than/less than) problems.

Students can practice math skills at their level. In my classroom, I could use this app if I have students who are already fluent in math computation. In other classes (kindergarten and above), this app could be used for extra practice for students who are struggling, or as early finisher work for independent practice.

Teach Your Monster to Read

Skill Area- phonics and reading

Grades- Pre-K through 1

This app has three games for three levels of play ranging from matching letters and sounds to reading fluently.

This app would be so much fun in my classroom! My kids would love using it and the three levels of play accommodate everyone- those who are still working on letters and sounds, those who can blend sounds, and those who are beginning to read. I would use it in the technology/computer center, and I could use it for assessment of letter sounds.

Quizlet

Skill area- vocabulary, language

Grades- Pre-K through 12

The Quizlet app is used for studying purposes. There are flashcards, matching games, race against the timer, true/false, and multiple choice questions.

In my Pre-K classroom, I would use this app using the flashcards component. I would have a letter on one side of the flashcard, and on the other side would be a picture of something that begins with that letter. Students would be able to use this app independently at the technology/computer center. They could also work with a partner to play the matching game and “beat the timer”.
